Why Do People Automatically Assume That A Sex Offender Is A Child Molester?

Sex Offender is a very vague term that covers a number of sex crimes; including urinating in public, mooning, flashing, streaking, skinny dipping, prostitution, and consensual sex between an 18 and 16 year old.
Before persecution and paranoia overwhelm them, why don’t people actually educate themselves. Sex offenses involving children only make up about 10% of all sex crimes. Around 90% of those involve someone the child knows, not a stranger.

I agree with you. They should define more what someone is charged with. I live in NC and they have to tell if any sex offender is in your neighborhood and they even give you there address, name and picture online. I do not like to judge people and they should tell more what there crime was instead of everyone assuming they raped or molested a child. They need to change the law. A child molester should be for them pervert that mess with children and not just the random person that messed up doing something, that they like to call a sex offender. People are such in a up roar to find out these people live around them and some are not what they seem to be. But people tend to assume the worse and like I said they should define it more or change the law. The odd thing is I do not see to many of them up there that are charged with actual rape, most are people that made dumb decisions and got caught, most of them were probley drunk at the time anyways.

You are absolutely right. People don’t seem to realize how easy it is for someone to be labeled a sex offender. Did you know that if a little boy kisses a little girl and the girl’s parents decide to “teach him a lesson”, they can (and have) file assault charges on him. If convicted, the boy has to register as a sex offender his entire life.
I saw a story about a man who, when he was 18 was caught having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend. They had been dating for 3 years before the incident. Her father charged him with statutory rape. This man was now in his 50’s and still has to register as a sex offender. By the way, he and that girlfriend are still married after more than 30 years.
There should be degrees, like with murder, assault, etc. Mooning someone has the same consequences as raping a child. Both “crimes” require the perpetrators to register as sex offenders for life.
Most sexual crimes are not perpetrated against children – those are just the most horrific. People really should educate themselves about what actions are considered sex crimes. Clearly, many people on here haven’t done that.
It is also not a bad idea to find out what a registered sex offender living near you was convicted of. You might take every possible precaution to protect your small children only to come home and find your wife has been raped. Don’t just assume someone convicted of a sex crime is after the children.

Sex offenders on the public list are level 2 or higher which are child molesters and rapists. Urinating in public would get you a lesser charge.

I agree, Sex Offenses are on different levels. The public really needs to educate themselves.

99% of the human race by the age of 21 are technically sex offenders, haha. Why, what did YOU do??? Haha.

All sex offenders are scum and there isn’t any better sex offender. Up to 16 years old is considered a child/juvenile by legal definition. There fore sex offenders can be considered worst than a child molester when the rape victim is a child. And why do you think nothing of prostitution? Children are forced into prostitution and traffic into strip bars, photos and videos so it’s all the same. Who has time to give street trials to figure out if there is a difference for each case. Consensual sex between an 18 and 16 year old you stated. Well, there are people who go and have sex with the mentally retarded and that’s the same difference you condone. By the way prostitution is not listed under sex offender.

people in this world are PARANOID! And do they not have a reason to be? There are so many sick people out there and so many targets for them! No one is safe anymore, and whenever a story is covered on the news about molestation, rape, etc. they use the term “sex offender” and the person who committed the crime. Yeah it may be a far fetched, overused term to the point of immense stereotyping, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, the name “sex offender” sounds a bit alerting, does it not?

    It goes with the territory.

i don’t think people care!!! They just don’t want a pervert living near them.
If someone has taken care of their issues and can prove it day in and day out, then I believe they will be left alone.

You are right, when I see a sexual predator I need to remember he might as easily rape Pelosi or Hillary as he would a child. yuck!!!!

Because urinating on a child in public is the same as molesting them in most people’s eyes.

Because people like to be morally better than most people to keep from killing themselves. That’s what you get when you play the morals game (which is bullshit).

  13. Omar |

    I don’t, that’s a big generalisation you made.

  14. amy |

Didn’t people assume that with Michael Jackson?
